New Years Ever - Flinders Street Melbourne

A hectic buzz filled the air as a sea of bobbing heads filled St Kilda Road bridge and Flinders Street Melbourne. People came from all over, across the Yarra, down from Elizabeth, Queen and Swanston Street all vying for a central spot to watch the fireworks show due at the stroke of midnight - the birth of 2008!

My friends and I pushed through this crowd which seem to flow all the way to Federation Square - an excellent viewing spot for the festivities. Also anywhere along the Yarra riverbanks from Batman to Spencer would also be an advantage.

I am sure people began to stand defiant to the swarming crowds to keep their position for some time. During new years eve lunch the mercury hit 41.1°C but a thanks go out to the big man for a cool breeze. We anchored in at quarter to twelve at the rise in Federation Square. It was a tight fit and we received a few elbows but we stood our ground.

True Live was performing, a constituent of the World Party @ Fed Square, with concert goers bustling to the makeshift stage arms raised in adoration. True Live are six classically trained musicians conjuring upbeat comtemporary jazz/party hip hop, an excellent backdrop to the time to come.

The countdown began from nowhere - it was time! Screens jumped out from all over counting down to midnight. The chorus became more eager with each numeral. Four, three, two, one!!…

Happy New Year!

What followed received adulation from all. Many digital video cameras where raised in praise documenting all possible. Our standpoint granted us permission to view fireworks ignited from all around with a multitude of types and colours launched on skyscraper roof tops both sides of the Yarra. The ten minute fireworks display brought 2008 in with style, certainly a spectacle not to be missed.

Public transport was in full swing helping thousands back out to the suburbs until 4 AM that night however party revellers continued to dance in the new year until the sun peered over the horizon. To all I wish greats things in 2008 and a very happy new year!
